Special Flood Hazard Area
What is Special Flood Hazard Area?
Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) is an area that is identified in a Flood Map as subject to flooding by having at least a one percent chance of flooding in any given year.
What It Means
The 1-percent annual chance flood is also referred to as the base flood or 100-year flood. In the context of mortgages, there is at least a 1 in 4 chance of flooding during a 30-year mortgage. All flood zones beginning with the letter A or V are considered SFHAs. If any part of the building or mobile home is within the SFHA, the entire building or mobile home is considered to be in the SFHA. SFHAs are designated by FEMA in the flood maps.
